I was amazed by China’s Fairytale City 🪷. This was filmed by Soph. Watch the full journey and explore the filming details and destinations on this page.

I spent the May holiday exploring Wuxi, and honestly, I can't believe more people aren’t talking about this city. Just a short trip from Shanghai, Wuxi surprised me with its beautiful ancient water towns, glowing lanterns, and the way it blends history with everyday life.

In this video, I take you with me to Huishan and Huinan ancient towns, where I watched the villages slowly shift from quiet mornings to glowing, lantern-lit nights. It was incredibly busy because of the National Holiday, but that energy added something special. The temples, bridges, and narrow streets were full of life. Wuxi felt like a secret, full of charm, yet somehow still under the radar.

If you’re looking for a hidden gem in China that mixes the old and new beautifully, I think you’ll love this one.

Canals, silk traders and local food

The traveler spends the May holiday in Wuxi, a short trip from Shanghai. The route passes canals and areas connected with silk traders. A bakery stop includes taro bread, while another waiting area has unusual decor and a place to cool down. These stops give the trip a casual pace before the walk along the water.

At mealtime, the traveler tries vegetarian noodles with Buddhist culinary influences and pairs them with local rice alcohol. The food offers a regional taste that differs from the bakery stop. The city exploration is centered on canals and neighborhood streets rather than a long-distance itinerary.

Lanterns and Nan Street

After dark, lanterns light up the canal and reflect on the water. The traveler crosses bridges and explores both sides of Nan Street, where traditional and modern settings sit alongside each other. Evening temperatures are comfortable, and the breeze makes the canal walk pleasant.

Dessert includes sticky rice with sesame and a dense ice cream flavored with peach and rose. The contrasting flavors round off the food stops. The video follows the visitor's May-holiday exploration, from silk-trader history and the bakery to the canal lights, Nan Street and local dishes.

Sophie’s latest travel vignette invites you into the quiet elegance of Wuxi, a city she describes as a hidden gem just a short trip from Shanghai. She spends a May holiday wandering two of the area’s most atmospheric historic spots, Huishan and Huinan ancient towns, where mornings are serene and evenings bloom into lantern-lit nights. The video captures the slow shift from calm streets to bustling, lantern-streaked passages as National Holiday crowds fill the bridges, temples, and narrow lanes with energy. The result is a vivid contrast between centuries-old architecture and the pulse of contemporary life, a balance Sophie terms a delicate blend of tradition and modernity. She emphasizes slow travel and personal observations over polished highlights, inviting viewers to feel the momentum of a city that feels both familiar and unexpectedly undiscovered.
