The bike trip has officially begun! Day 1 of our three-week, 1,000 km ride around the entire island of TAIWAN! If you didn't know, Taiwan actually has a dedicated cycling route that circumferences the entire island, it's called Cycling Route 1, and this is what we will be following (with a couple of detours) over the next three weeks. Cycling Route 1 can be done in just 9 days for those who are really looking for a challenge, but we want to explore all the stops along the way so we're adding extra days to ensure we not only get challenged but also get to travel Taiwan in the most unique way possible!

Leaving Taipei on Cycling Route 1

Max and Jacqueline start a three-week cycling journey around Taiwan with a first-day ride of about 75 kilometers from Taipei to Hsinchu. Their overall plan is to cover more than 1,000 kilometers around the island. They leave the city, cross the main river and join Cycling Route 1. The first part of the route is smooth, but bumpy roads and steep climbs add difficulty. A significant hill tests them as they ride through changing scenery and traffic.

The couple prepare with cycling shorts and bikes rented from Bike Express. They pause at a convenience store for snacks and coffee, take a water break and share notes about equipment. They recommend reliable bikes and comfortable shorts for a long ride. They also discuss travel medical insurance and recommend SafetyWing Nomad Insurance, mentioning subscription-style billing and the reassurance it gave them for an adventurous trip.

Reaching Hsinchu

After the climb, they continue through the Taiwanese countryside and arrive in Hsinchu. They find accommodation and explore the local night market, which is inside a temple. They sample street food and interact with vendors. When English is limited, they suggest pointing to dishes other customers have ordered to communicate a food choice. They also advise booking accommodation in advance if daily progress is uncertain, which can reduce last-minute stress.

The video ends with reflections on the opening day and an invitation to follow their daily updates as the three-week ride continues. Their first leg establishes the distance and physical effort of the trip while giving them time to enjoy the views, snacks and food in Hsinchu. Their ride begins with a city departure, a river crossing and a transition onto Route 1. They stop at a convenience store, pause for water and tackle a difficult climb before continuing through countryside. The 75-kilometer first day ends in Hsinchu, where they find accommodation and visit a night market inside a temple. They try local dishes and interact with vendors, then reflect on the route and their preparation. The daily vlog format lets viewers follow each stage of the planned three-week journey.
