Markets, winter streets and Wing Chun

Wanderlust Rosie travels from Guangzhou to Beijing during a frosty January, staying at a Hampton by Hilton with a robot butler. After a hotel breakfast with tang, she visits Shahi market, one of Beijing’s biggest markets. She samples white fritters for 50 cents and buys sugar cane. Later, she finds a small burger shop with craft beer, chooses hot chocolate and supports a cafe run by people with hearing disabilities. A stop at Walmart shows festive Chinese New Year decorations, though the layout feels unusual to her.

Rosie then checks into a city-center apartment with a kitchenette and takes a Wing Chun class, booked through Meituan for 35 yuan. The class is engaging, but she gets hungry afterward and goes to a ramen shop with very large portions. A hot bath becomes her favorite way to recover from the cold. The next morning, around 7 a.m., she goes to an early market in freezing temperatures and buys pork ribs for soup. She enjoys the quiet atmosphere and a steamed bun that warms her hands.

Deer park, shared kitchen and Chongqing

At Olympic Park, Rosie feeds deer and goats and sees her first snow of the trip. Deer initially kept in an enclosure are released to roam freely. She later visits Asia’s largest Sam’s Club and spends about 1,000 yuan on groceries. A planned community cooking session takes place in a shared kitchen. She prepares chicken curry and radish soup, and when expected guests do not arrive, invites hotel staff to join her.

Rosie also visits an agricultural exhibition center for a Chinese New Year expo and explores Shichahai, including a frozen lake with winter activities. At Miniso, a blind-box purchase gives her a bear figurine instead of the shark she hoped for. She then passes through Chongqing, seeing the Liberation Monument and Hong Ya Dong at night. The trip combines market food, winter experiences, martial arts, cooking and urban sightseeing. Rosie’s chapters include transit in Chongqing and the city’s night view, after her Beijing days exploring markets, hutongs and the frozen lake.
