I didn’t Expect Rural China to look like this ! 🇨🇳 Incredible Crop Drying Terraces

I didn’t Expect Rural China to look like. This was filmed by Middle Kingdom Productions. Watch the full journey and explore the filming details and destinations on this page.

In this video I travel deep into rural China to Huangling Village in an area of Jiangxi Province called Wuyuan. Huangling Village is in my opinion one of the world’s most beautiful villages. It is nestled on the side of a rural hill in this mountainous central Chinese province. It is all about the ordinary life of locals in the area, farming the terraces and drying chilli and other crops on bamboo baskets attached to their rooftops. The villagers use a method called “shaiqiu” (晒秋), which means sun-drying in autumn, to preserve their crops.

Huangling's homes and hillside setting

Middle Kingdom Productions visits Huangling Village in Jiangxi Province, in an area of Wuyuan. The village has a history spanning more than 500 years and offers a view of rural life. Wooden houses are built along hillsides, with views over terraced fields and rolling hills. The camera follows the streets and homes and records how the setting shapes the routines of residents. The village's architecture and farming practices remain part of everyday life even as tourism grows.

One of the clearest traditions in the video is “shaiqiu,” a method of sun-drying crops in autumn. Villagers place chilies and other crops on bamboo baskets attached to rooftops. Drying the harvest helps preserve it for storage, particularly through winter. The baskets add color to the rooftops and connect the village's appearance to food preparation. The name translates as “sun-drying in autumn,” and the video shows how this traditional practice supports food preservation through the year.

Daily work and changing tourism

The video observes villagers carrying wooden poles and tools and working together in the fields. Their hands-on routines and cooperation contribute to village life. Middle Kingdom Productions also shows how tourism has gradually become part of the local economy. Residents offer homestays and sell freshly sun-dried products directly to visitors. The source presents this as a way to create income while maintaining the village's character and traditions.

Local villagers are proud to share their culture and peaceful way of life, and the source suggests joining a local guide for a more personal visit. The film considers how the village's future depends on preserving its farming practices and heritage while responding to tourism. Its emphasis remains on the crops, rooftops, wooden homes, fields, work routines, and interactions with local people. Huangling's distinctive appearance comes from the combination of hillside architecture and crops drying in the autumn sun. The visit provides a view of a community balancing longstanding agricultural routines with the opportunities brought by guests and product sales.
