Travel Guides & Tips in this video

Soph's trip to Mohe, China's northernmost city, brings -40°C temperatures and a series of unusual winter experiences. She arrives by sleeper train after crossing 3,500 kilometers of China, layers up, then visits a local club at 11:00 a.m. wearing snow boots and thermals. The day includes feeding reindeer, walking through snowy forest and encountering a frozen outdoor toilet. At the China–Russia border, she looks across the Heilong River, then visits a Christmas village with snow houses and lights. She eats at a local restaurant and stays in a luxurious hotel. Her guide also works as a forest firefighter in summer. The journey offers a practical reason to consider visiting Mohe in spring, summer or autumn instead of during the extreme cold.

SURVIVING IN -40°c IN CHINA’S ARCTIC CITY | Mohe

Reaching Mohe in winter

Soph travels to Mohe, China's northernmost city, where temperatures reach -40°C. She arrives on a sleeper train after covering 3,500 kilometers across China by different forms of transport. The cold is clear as soon as she steps outside, and she needs multiple layers to stay warm. Because public transportation is limited, she relies on a local guide to get around.

The guide takes Soph to a local club at 11:00 a.m. It is an unexpected daytime outing: people dance while wearing snow boots and warm layers, and Soph joins in wearing thermals. She then meets reindeer and feeds them. The snowy forest provides a quieter stop, with snow crunching underfoot. The trip also includes a frozen outdoor toilet, which makes the practical challenges of visiting in such low temperatures very real.

Border scenery and a Christmas village

Soph visits the China–Russia border, where the two countries meet along the Heilong River. From there, the landscape's scale and the snow-covered surroundings are part of the experience. She also goes to a Christmas village, where snow houses and festive lights create a different setting from the forest and border. Later, she eats at a local restaurant and stays in a luxurious hotel. The video includes a look at how many layers she wears and her reflections on the cold.

Her guide has another job during the warmer months: he works as a forest firefighter in summer. That seasonal role is one example of how local livelihoods change across the year. Soph's experience shows why a warmer season may be more comfortable for visitors who do not want to face Mohe's winter temperatures. Spring, summer or autumn would avoid the conditions she encountered, while still allowing travelers to explore the area with a guide.

FAQs (From the traveler's perspective)

Q: What was it like to go to a club in -40°C weather?

Q: What was the most memorable part of your Mohe trip?
A: The frozen toilet was probably the most memorable because it was such an unusual experience. Seeing and feeding the reindeer was amazing as well.
Q: What's the best time to visit Mohe?
A: Spring, summer or autumn would be better for me than winter. The temperatures during this trip were extremely cold, reaching -40°C.
