So, now we move to the year of the rabbit, and let's hope 2023 is significantly different to 2022! Please join me and William as we travel on the high speed rail network near Shanghai. Chinese New Year is the festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. In Chinese, the festival is commonly referred to as the Spring Festival (traditional Chinese: 春節; simplified Chinese: 春节; pinyin: Chūnjié) as the spring season in the lunisolar calendar traditionally starts with lichun, the first of the twenty-four solar terms which the festival celebrates around the time of the Chinese New Year. Marking the end of winter and the beginning of the spring season, observances traditionally take place from New Year's Eve, the evening preceding the first day of the year to the Lantern Festival, held on the 15th day of the year. The first day of Chinese New Year begins on the new moon that appears between 21 January and 20 February.

Chinese New Year Migration

Leaving Zhenjiang after the holiday

Tim Chambers and William travel from Zhenjiang back to Shanghai after Chinese New Year. Zhenjiang has fewer than a million residents, yet the number of trains leaving within a short period gives them a view of the scale of post-holiday travel across China. The station is busy with people returning to work after the break. They board the G7229 high-speed train, joining travelers heading toward Shanghai.

The ride takes place during a crowded travel period. Tim and William describe the packed train and the close proximity of passengers, noting that crowded public transport can increase the risk of infection. Their route passes Suzhou station before continuing to Shanghai. They also show the train boards and station displays that help travelers track where they are and plan connections during busy periods.

Arriving in Shanghai

The train reaches Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, where the large number of arriving passengers reflects the flow of people returning to the city. Tim and William make their way through the busy station entrance and continue by Shanghai Metro line one. Their destination is People's Square. The final part of the journey shows the metro during a busy period and offers their observation of Shanghai returning to normal after the holiday. The video records this single trip from Zhenjiang through Suzhou to Shanghai, focusing on the crowded stations, high-speed rail and local transit that connect the route. The chapter stops trace the route from Zhenjiang station to the train, past Suzhou, and into Shanghai Hongqiao, followed by the metro ride to People's Square. Station boards and digital displays help travelers follow progress and connections during the busy period. Tim and William's trip is one part of a much larger return to work after the holiday, visible in the packed train and the flow through the Shanghai station. The video stays with their specific journey and transportation, showing the shift from the departure city to the busy arrival and metro platforms.
