Exploring the Summer Palace by boat was an unforgettable experience. The serene beauty of the lake and the surrounding gardens was breathtaking. But then, something unexpected happened! It added an exciting twist to the already amazing boat tour. Later, I explored the vibrant Wangfujing Street, a shopper's paradise. The night market was bustling with activity, a feast for the senses. I experienced the best of Beijing, from peaceful landscapes to lively city streets. It truly was an unforgettable trip.

Exploring Summer Palace by Boat - Then THIS Happened! 😱

Arriving at the Summer Palace

Sven Travel begins at the Summer Palace in Beijing, where the first things he notices are the calm lake and the small boats on it. He spends some time searching for the Garden of Virtue and Harmony before heading out onto Kunming Lake. From the water he can see the temples and the traditional buildings along the shore, among them the Tower of Buddhist Incense and a pagoda. Many of these sights sit on hillsides, so he does a fair amount of stair climbing on the way.

The boat rental and the mishap

Sven rents an electric boat. The rental cost 200 RMB with a 600 RMB deposit. He got the deposit back, but it was awkward, because the process needed a QR code scan that required a Chinese phone number, and he did not have one. Checking boats in and out relies on that kind of code, so a visitor without a local number needs a backup plan. He steers across the lake to the temple island, and along the way the boat has an unexpected near-collision, which he calls the most memorable moment of the outing. The trip starts out peaceful and turns tense for a moment, and Sven tells it with humor.

Wangfujing in the evening

In the last part of the day Sven walks along Wangfujing shopping street. It is very busy, with malls, souvenir shops and street stalls, and he moves through the crowds looking at everything on offer, from souvenirs to local products. He did not buy much, but he enjoyed seeing it all, and the noise and activity are a strong contrast with the quiet of the lake earlier in the day.

Taken together, the day shows two sides of Beijing: the historic grounds of the Summer Palace and the crowded shopping streets of the city center. His advice for a Summer Palace visit is simple. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, expect plenty of stairs and leave enough time, because the place is huge. He also suggests carrying your passport and keeping an eye on your belongings in crowded areas like Wangfujing.
