We went on a road trip through Shandong, China, searching for hidden gems and lesser-known places across the Jiaodong Peninsula. Our journey took us through Weihai, Laoshan, Changyi and Laizhou, where we explored the coast, tasted fresh Chinese seafood and tried local Shandong BBQ.<br><br>The biggest surprise was Heiyangshan Quarry Lake, also known as Black Sheep Mountain, a surreal blue quarry lake hidden in the Shandong countryside. Their first stop was Changyi, a small town that doesn't make many tourist brochures. The local barbecue restaurant was packed, and the meal cost almost half of what they'd pay in Beijing. Emma tried Tsingtao beer in its home province, dug into juicy beef ribs, and discovered a cucumber dish that became her favorite. A friendly reminder: Shandong food is the quiet master behind many Chinese cuisines, and this roadside dinner proved it.

The real magic came the next morning. Jimi had saved a location on RedNote—an abandoned charcoal mine that had become a surreal blue quarry lake. The navigation app gave up halfway, forcing them to follow a rough dirt road in their SUV. They passed through a rusty gate and suddenly saw it: Heiyangshan, also known as Black Sheep Mountain. Only three other groups were there. They set up a tent ordered from a delivery app the day before, forgot to bring a table, and camped beside the lake. From above, the smaller green lake nearby was shaped like a heart. Jimi and Emma had found one of China's most unexpected hidden gems.

After two hours by the water, they skipped Yantai and drove straight to Weihai. They arrived at sunset and checked into a cute Airbnb on the 19th floor with a view of the sea. The coastline looked almost European, with castle-like buildings and golden beaches. That evening, they sampled Weihai seafood at a cozy restaurant run by a friendly female owner, who swapped their cups for cuter ones. Emma bravely tried a strange crunchy seafood while joking about getting poisoned together. Back at the Airbnb, they spent an hour trying to connect a projector to a USB, only to realize they needed an HDMI cable. Their cheers echoed through the room when it finally worked.

Day three was set to bring them to Laoshan, a famous mountain on the peninsula. The trip was spontaneous, slightly chaotic, and full of small adventures—from buying four speakers to getting lost on dirt roads. It was exactly the kind of road trip that makes you feel like you're running away from something, in the best possible way.
