China EV Test Drive: XPENG L3 Autonomous Car in Beijing

Reanne and Ben were invited to the launch of the all-new XPENG L3 in Beijing, a car designed to challenge European automakers. The sleek SUV, designed by a former Ferrari designer, impressed with its premium feel without the premium price tag. From the moment they stepped inside, they were struck by the spacious interior, ambient lighting, and massive sunroof. The 15-inch screen and AI voice assistant – nicknamed 'the little alien guy' – controlled everything from air conditioning to the massage seats.
Taking the car for a test drive, Reanne found it incredibly smooth and quiet, almost silent. The autonomous driving feature was a standout: the car handled steering, braking, and lane changes on its own, following the satnav. 'It's doing a very good job,' Reanne noted, though she had to concentrate on the road. The car also offered a 440 km range per charge, with a hybrid version reaching 1,000 km. Practical features included a 650L boot, hidden drawer, and ventilated seats.
Beyond the car, the event itself was well-organized – a posh buffet lunch, beautiful mountainous scenery, and a hotel that truly looked after them. But the day took an unexpected turn when Reanne and Ben received a last-minute job offer, forcing them to cancel their flight and scramble for a budget hotel on the outskirts of Beijing. The hotel, at £28 a night, was a far cry from the previous night's luxury, but it had a robot delivery service – though the robot didn't initially show up, leading to a comedy of errors. In the end, they enjoyed a noodle delivery and reflected on the unpredictable nature of their influencer lifestyle. From high-tech cars to mundane hotel rooms, this was a day that captured the highs and lows of traveling China.
