We take a stroll into China's leading technology hub which was deemed as the most 'futuristic city' in China. Is it? We find out. Some herald it as China's most technologically advanced cities, some call it the Dubai of China. We are Pat & Giulia, a couple from 🇬🇧 and 🇮🇹 living in London. We decided to go travelling and ended up living getting stuck in Malaysia during 2020 which spurred the creation of this channel, we're now back on the road after a lengthy hiatus! We're travel enthusiasts who enjoy discovering spots off the tourist trail and don’t like taking ourselves too seriously.

Travel Guides & Tips in this video

Pat and Giulia describe Shenzhen as China's most futuristic city and note its clean, modern infrastructure and efficient train stations. They use online car-hailing services, which they compare with their experiences in the UK. Their food stops include tomato and egg noodles and dumplings; they also notice vinegar in Chinese cuisine. The couple find karaoke machines in shopping malls and an open-air market atmosphere. Their hotel room is older and less appealing than its pictures suggested. They leave with a positive impression of a city that combines technology and affluence with local character and traditional elements. The visit moves from transportation and architecture to noodles, dumplings, karaoke machines and markets. Their hotel stay is a reminder that even in a modern, affluent city, their own experience can differ from what they expected from online pictures.

Our FIRST time in China's MOST futuristic city.. 🇨🇳 | Shenzhen, China Vlog 2024

Modern Shenzhen and getting around

Pat and Giulia visit Shenzhen for the first time and describe it as China's most futuristic city. They notice clean surroundings, modern infrastructure and efficient train stations. The vlog shows sleek architecture, high-end malls and modern transportation. Online car-hailing is easy to find, including around train stations, and the couple compare that convenience with their experience in the UK. Their first impressions center on the city's technology and infrastructure, while the ease of arranging a ride is a practical detail of moving around.

The visit also includes food and everyday city life. Pat and Giulia try tomato and egg noodles and dumplings, and note the use of vinegar in Chinese cuisine. Karaoke machines in shopping malls and the open-air atmosphere of local markets give them other points of comparison with the city's polished, high-end spaces. The mix of malls, shops and markets shows different sides of Shenzhen's shopping scene. Their hotel room is older and less appealing than the photos had suggested, providing a less positive contrast with the modern city outside.

A mix of modern and local character

The room does not overturn the couple's overall positive impression. They describe Shenzhen as both futuristic and affluent, while also finding character in its food, markets and other local details. The sleek buildings and high-end shopping are part of the experience, as are the noodles, dumplings, vinegar and karaoke machines they encounter. Their account balances the city's modern image with the ordinary situations that shape a first visit, including arranging transportation and checking into a room that falls short of its pictures. Pat and Giulia leave with an impression of a city where contemporary amenities and local experiences sit side by side.
