We then visited the Churin food company and saw how they bake 2000 loaves of 'lieba' a day (a type of Russian bread) I also got to taste kvass a drink made from the by-product of baking the bread.

Daoli Market tastings

Wilco Wanders visits Harbin’s Daoli Market with translator Anna, trying a range of local foods and talking with vendors. The market sequence includes sausages, Guobaorou, a squid stick, sticky rice dumplings and birch water. Wilco also tastes crispy sweet treats and considers how the different stalls prepare their food. He buys Russian dolls, a keepsake that reflects Harbin’s Russian cultural influences. The market is not only a food stop: conversations with vendors and Anna’s translation help him understand what he is tasting and how the goods fit into local life.

Churin bakery and lieba bread

The second major stop is Churin, a bakery company with a history spanning five generations. Wilco watches the production of lieba bread and learns about the traditional methods used by the bakers. The scale of the bread-making operation stands out, and the bakery owner shares details about the business. Wilco tries the bread and other sweet treats, then samples kvass, a drink made from the by-product of bread baking. He describes the kvass as sweet and bubbly. The bakery visit gives a closer look at how bread production connects to Harbin’s food culture, while the market had shown the variety of snacks available to visitors.

The two stops make the episode a food-focused walk through Harbin. Wilco moves from market stalls to a long-running bakery, with Anna translating and local people offering context. His tasting list ranges from dumplings and birch juice to lieba and kvass; the Russian dolls add a non-food reminder of the city’s cultural history. The video closes with Wilco’s appreciation of both the food and the people he met.
