Backpacker Ben and his travel companion Katarina set out to experience Shanghai's worst-rated hotel, a one-star establishment costing just £10 a night. Before the challenge, they travel from Guangzhou to Shanghai via high-speed train, with Katarina enjoying business class while Ben rides economy. Upon arrival in Shanghai, they first stay in a mediocre £40 hotel with a dismal view before checking into the infamous cheap hotel. The room tour reveals cigarette-stained sheets, moldy walls, suspicious brown stains, and a bathroom where the shower doubles as a toilet. The night is brutal: chain-smoking neighbors, vibrating karaoke until past 1 AM, and a pervasive smell of smoke. Earlier, Ben finally attempts eating chicken feet—both fresh from a market stall and pre-packaged—finding the texture fatty and jelly-like, ultimately deciding it's not for him. They also explore the Bund, sightsee the Shanghai Tower, and get denied entry to a Michelin-starred restaurant for wearing tracky bottoms. After a sleepless night, they escape to Seoul, South Korea, where they later get caught in a blizzard.
