Inside China’s Largest Concrete Jungle. This was filmed by Homeless Pelican. Watch the full journey and explore the filming details and destinations on this page.

Inside China’s largest concrete jungle apartment complex, home to 500,000 people — the Huaguoyuan Community in Guiyang City, Guizhou Province. World’s biggest and most crowded residential area, it has over 300 high-rise buildings, mostly 40+ floors, covering 10 sq km (4 sq miles).

Once China’s largest slum, it was redeveloped into a modern complex with parks, schools, hospitals, public transport, and shops. The dense towers stand so close sunlight barely reaches the ground.

I visited with a local girl, Yang. We explored the buildings, met residents, tried local food, and saw daily life inside this massive concrete jungle — small spaces, cheap prices, and a strong community in world’s most packed neighborhoods.

A multi-level community in Guiyang

Homeless Pelican visits Huaguoyuan Community in Guiyang, Guizhou Province, with his local friend Yang. The area is described as home to 500,000 people across 300 high-rise buildings. They move through streets and bridges that run across different levels, seeing how the buildings connect to create a complex network of homes, services and public spaces. The towers stand close together, so sunlight has difficulty reaching some ground-level areas. From the 40th floor, the scale and layout of the community become easier to see.

Many businesses operate inside residential buildings. The pair pass barber shops, beauty salons, hotels, retail shops and a billiard club, showing how daily services are woven into the neighborhood. Homeless Pelican and Yang talk with residents and watch people use the shared spaces, including areas where people play mahjong, exercise or relax. The visit presents a place with a dense built environment and an active community life, rather than only a collection of tall buildings.

Housing, services and renewal

The travelers discuss apartment prices and compare larger family units with smaller homes. Homeless Pelican considers how housing affordability relates to life in this densely populated area. A meal costs him about $1.50, and Yang says she thinks that is too much. He also gets a one-dollar haircut, an example of how inexpensive some everyday services can be. At the main plaza, they look at the garbage disposal area and discuss the practical work of managing waste for a large population.

Fire safety is another topic. The video shows fire stations and safety systems, and Homeless Pelican considers the infrastructure needed for high-rise living. Huaguoyuan has been transformed from a shanty town into a modern residential complex, a renewal project that brought new buildings and facilities while creating the demands of a large, closely built community. The pair also notice parks, playgrounds and other green spaces among the towers, with mountains visible beyond the dense development.

The visit includes a look at how residents move between apartment buildings, businesses, elevators and public areas. Homeless Pelican and Yang observe the multi-level layout, the plaza and the services people can reach within the community. Their conversations and observations focus on this neighborhood: its housing, daily costs, waste systems, safety measures and shared spaces. The scale is striking, but the account also includes ordinary details such as a haircut, a meal and people spending time together. It offers a personal view of how Huaguoyuan functions as a residential area and how urban renewal reshaped the site.
