Vic and Jeff, eaters from LA, spent four days in Shenzhen, China, exploring 22 food spots ranging from Michelin-starred restaurants to local hidden gems. Their journey kicked off at the world’s first Muji Hotel in UpperHills, where they admired the woody aesthetics and complimentary snacks. They then ventured into the lush greenery of Lianhuashan Park, surprised by how green and futuristic Shenzhen felt—comparing it to Singapore. A highlight was the mushroom hot pot at Moje, where they savored wild mushrooms, free-range Hainan chicken, and even edible spring flowers. The next morning brought a sunrise hike, followed by a visit to a packed coffee shop for a moonlit pear drink. They witnessed drone delivery in action and explored the open-air pedestrian streets of MixC World, their favorite mall. The Yunnan restaurant impressed them with a sour papaya fish pot, and they marveled at the 360-degree immersive light show at Civic Center—complete with a pickleball session beforehand. After moving to a hotel in Shenzhen Bay, they enjoyed classic dim sum at Dian Dou De, a chain since 1933, and declared the baked pork pastry the best bite. They also tried goose, a variety of breads from a bakery, and a massive 2kg crawfish platter. The beef hot pot at Chaofa Chaoshan in Dongmen featured lean, tender cuts and a game-changing beef ball. They ended with a Chinese dessert and a dim sum spot with blue har gow. Overall, the first part of their Shenzhen adventure blew them away with its blend of modern infrastructure, green spaces, and incredible food diversity.
