Rhea Shanika kicks off her Great Wall of China day trip with a pre-dawn coffee at a Beijing McDonald's, battling jet lag but buzzing with excitement. After a two-hour bus ride through rural scenery, she arrives at the Mutianyu section, a quieter alternative to the more famous Badaling. Choosing the east side, she takes a dizzying cable car up—her first ever—and is awestruck by the lush green valley and the wall snaking across the mountains.
Once on the wall, Rhea is hit by two surprises: the crowds at midday and the insane steepness of the steps. She pushes through the tourist-heavy lower sections, climbing higher until the path thins out and she finds moments of peace. At the top, the view stretches for miles. Our tour guide mentions the wall stretches 21,000 kilometers. That's longer than flying to Italy and back! She can't believe ancient builders created this by hand over 2,000 years.
The highlight of the day? The toboggan slide down. Rhea is terrified and thrilled as she zips down the mountain, calling it the best part of the entire trip. At the bottom, she buys a magnet from a cute vendor and treats herself to her first Chinese ice cream. The included lunch is another unexpected win—sweet and sour chicken that tastes nothing like the version back in England. Rhea ends the day back in Beijing, exhausted but smiling, having checked off one of the world's greatest wonders.
