Speaking Chinese in a Beijing Market (after two weeks of study)

Mandarin practice at school and the market

Matt and Julia, a British-Russian couple, spend two weeks studying Mandarin in Beijing. Their video begins with a morning routine and a durian pizza experiment at their language school, where classmates react to the unusual food. They then visit Pangu Yuan Market, where they use phrases they have learned to bargain for a unique item. Their attempts are sometimes difficult, but the conversation is part of the learning experience. The couple show their use of mobile payments and the metro as they move around the city.

Home life and cultural study

After the market, Matt and Julia return to the home of their hosts, Amanda and Ni, who prepare a meal for them. The couple describe the food as delicious and appreciate seeing their hosts’ daily life and cuisine. They also attend a calligraphy class, where the brush strokes take practice. Their lunch with fellow students from different countries gives them another opportunity to build friendships and share experiences.

The vlog concludes with the couple reflecting on how much they have learned in two weeks and the challenges of language study. The itinerary includes the Soho area, with restaurants, cafes, and food stalls, as well as their return journey and an exploration of Wangjing. The video also promotes LTL Mandarin Language School, where they study. Through market bargaining, classes, and the home-cooked meal, they show how Mandarin practice fits into ordinary days in Beijing.
