Jiuzhaigou & Huanglong: China's Most Beautiful Lakes in Sichuan

Vanessa Huang and her travel companion set off on a three-day journey to Jiuzhaigou, often called the most beautiful lake in China. Their adventure began at Chengdu East Station, where they highlighted the need to arrive early and pre-book high-speed train tickets using English-friendly platforms like Trip.com. The train ride offered a glimpse of the changing landscape, from urban to mountainous, with wild horses and sheep along the way. Upon arrival, they were picked up by the InterContinental Jiuzhai Paradise, a resort that felt like a forest retreat with a giant dome, Tibetan-inspired decor, and even peacocks. The room tour revealed thoughtful amenities, including a pillow menu and a balcony with freezing temperatures.
The next day, they entered Jiuzhaigou National Park, using their passports for entry. The park's bus system took them to Arrow Bamboo Lake, where the crystal-clear turquoise water and frozen waterfalls amazed them. They walked along crowded paths, noting the limestone minerals that gave the lakes their color. At Panda Lake, they found it frozen solid, while Five Flower Lake was vibrant but not frozen. They searched for the iconic layered lake seen online, only to discover it was actually in Huanglong, not Jiuzhaigou. Despite some repetitive views, the Mirror Lake’s reflection and the wide Nuorilang Waterfall—the widest in China—impressed them. They also dealt with altitude sickness at 3,000 meters, with many visitors using oxygen tanks.
After a tiring day, they relaxed at the hotel’s hot spring, even daring a cold plunge in -2°C weather. That evening, they enjoyed a traditional dinner with live tribal performances. On day three, they decided to reschedule their train to visit Huanglong, sacrificing their seats for standing tickets. They navigated luggage storage issues, took a taxi to Huanglong, and used the free shuttle to the cable car. At Huanglong, the high altitude (3,500 m) made breathing difficult, but the Five Color Pond (Wǔcǎichí) was breathtaking—a series of colorful, terraced pools. They hiked down 4 km, passing frozen ponds and a huge waterfall. Despite the physical challenges and the 2-hour standing train ride back, Vanessa declared it totally worth it. The trip offered a mix of natural beauty, cultural insights, and practical travel tips for anyone visiting these UNESCO sites in Sichuan.
