Should we be worried about the future? Shenzhen China is often referred as the most futuristic city on earth. From drone delivery to robotaxi roaming the roads, humanoid robot baristas, automated street cleaners and AI everywhere, the technologies of tomorrow are already here today in Shenzhen. If you are scared of AI and robots, this is probably the last place you want to visit but if like us you are curious about what our lives could look like in a few years, Shenzhen city truly opened a window into the future. Our goal was to challenge humans and robots in different daily talks and see who or what ends up winning and the result truly surprised us. At the end of the day, we had a lot of fun during our Shenzhen tour and being able to experience drone deliveries, robotaxi rides, and just see what technology can do for us was really incredible.

The adventure kicks off with a smoothie delivered by a drone, and from that moment, the line between science fiction and reality blurs completely. Dave sets up a series of fun challenges pitting human services against their technological counterparts, starting with a delivery race between a drone and a motorbike for McDonald's. To his astonishment, the human delivery guy wins by a landslide, arriving in less than seven minutes while the drone took twenty-seven. This playful competition sets the tone for the entire exploration. Next, they visit Huawei's flagship store at the High-Tech Park, where the tech on display is mind-boggling. Dave excitedly explores a car that features a relaxing zero-gravity seat, a projector for rear passengers, and multiple screens, all of which are standard features. He notes that these fully electric cars are incredibly affordable compared to the US, though he jokingly worries about data collection. The highlight of the trip comes when Dave and Tracy take separate rides: Tracy in a fully autonomous robotaxi and Dave in a regular DD (the Chinese Uber). While Tracy's ride is smoother and more peaceful, Dave's human-driven car arrives at the destination faster. They decide to award a point to technology for the superior experience, acknowledging that the robotaxi's perfect driving and comfort won them over. Throughout their journey, they stumble upon other marvels: a robot that serves soft serve ice cream at a shopping mall, a stunning spiral library in Houhai, and even a glimpse of flying taxis (EHang) at an operational demonstration center. At the world's largest electronic market, Huaqiangbei, they are overwhelmed by the sheer scale and find everything from cheap drones to high-end brands. A taste test between a human-made coffee from Luckin and a robot barista quickly ends in a win for humans, as the robot coffee is described as tasting like blood. Their tour also includes a visit to a robot restaurant where meals are delivered by robots coming out of the walls, a quick stop at a futuristic hotel with a water machine instead of plastic bottles, and a final ride for Dave in a robotaxi, which leaves him completely blown away. In the end, despite all the impressive technology, Dave and Tracy agree that nothing beats human connection, noting that the robot waiter couldn't recommend a favorite dish. The city, with its stunning green spaces and incredible subway system, leaves a lasting impression, but it's the human touch that ultimately wins their hearts.

What were the robot-delivered smoothies like?
They looked really good and had zero spillage. The drone delivery definitely added to the experience, but the taste was genuinely nice on its own.
Was the robot taxi ride smooth?
Extremely smooth. The braking and acceleration were perfect, taking out all the human error. It was a very peaceful ride, even in heavy traffic.
How was the robot barista coffee compared to a human-made one?
It was awful, tasting like blood! The machine seemed out of beans. The human-made coffee from Luckin was a 10 out of 10, while the robot one was a clear loss.
What is the robot restaurant experience like?
Robots bring the food from the wall and drop it onto a magnetic yellow path that leads to your table. It's cool, but you miss the human interaction and recommendations from a waiter.
Is it worth visiting the 6S Robot store?
It has cool tech, like a face scanner that checks your health, but Tracy thought it was skippable unless you're really into robots. It costs 49 yuan to enter, with extra fees for experiences.
