How to get from zero to HSK 6 in less than three years. I have been getting lots of questions lately about how I learned Mandarin, so today I am sharing with you some of my tips about how to become fluent quickly through self-teaching. Why I learned Chinese. Why I didn't take classes. Is it really necessary to learn how to write by hand? (update: apparently the new HSK coming out next few years will require writing some characters by hand, so if you plan to take HSK unfortunately the digital test will be phased out in 2023-4). Importance of listening comprehension as a beginner. Don't rote memorize words without knowing how to use them. There are plenty of other cartoons out there too but I personally found these to be the best because the voices are clearly understandable (no screechy/weird voices, no super fast talking, etc), the animation is well done, and the storylines are reasonably interesting and won’t completely bore you to sleep. I watched pretty much every episode on Youtube of all three of these and it was more than enough to move on to shows for adults. The perfect reading comprehension improvement tool for English learners and Chinese learners alike!

TIPS FOR SELF-TEACHING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE 🌍 📚

How Katherine began learning Mandarin

Katherine, a master's student from the United States, became interested in Mandarin after meeting a Chinese-speaking lab group while studying in Nanjing. Rather than taking formal classes, she chose to teach herself. She made listening a regular part of her routine, using Chinese-language children's shows such as Peppa Pig and other cartoons. The programs gave her clear speech and simple vocabulary to follow, though the repeated sounds could become tiresome.

She says listening comprehension matters because it helps learners follow the natural flow of the language. She also recommends learning vocabulary through example sentences, which show how a word works in context. Memorizing isolated words without knowing how to use them was not the approach she preferred. Handwriting was another choice she considered: she felt it was not essential for daily life in China and might not justify the time it takes to learn.

Practice and motivation

Katherine went from a beginner to HSK 6 in two and a half years. The qualification let her pursue her master's program entirely in Chinese. Her account emphasizes steady listening, practical use and speaking with other people. When a conversation partner is not available, she suggests talking to yourself as a way to keep practicing. She also encourages language learners to find a reason they personally care about, such as a genuine love of the language, so practice remains enjoyable and sustainable.

Her recommendations come from her own experience learning in China: listen often, notice how vocabulary appears in full sentences, and use opportunities to speak. Children's shows and cartoons supplied listening material, while the Chinese-speaking lab group first sparked her interest. Together, those experiences shaped her self-study routine and supported her progress toward HSK 6.
