Packing for a bike tour across China

Katherine and her husband have been touring northern China by bicycle for months at a time, going home to Hangzhou between stretches to rest and edit their videos. Their route began in Heilongjiang and continued through the three northeastern provinces, then west toward Inner Mongolia, Hebei and Shanxi. In spring they set off from Xi'an, crossed Ningxia and kept going through Gansu. Xinjiang is next, and she says they plan to explore Central Asia after the bike portion of the trip.

She walks through the bags attached to the bicycle and shows how she sorts clothes and other belongings into packing cubes after putting things in random places. She keeps shirts and pants separate from the dirty clothes, so she can find items quickly. She also mentions that many of the hotels and inns where they stayed had washing machines, especially rural homestays, so they usually did not have to wash clothes by hand.

What goes in each bag

Katherine packs a warm hat even in August, because the places they travel can feel cold after sunset, particularly when it rains. A small towel is in there too, since some hotels she encountered lacked regular towels or provided disposable ones. Her bags can expand when she has more to carry and compress to fit into a bike bag, and a separate miscellaneous pouch keeps small items from getting lost.

Backup cash sits in that less accessible bag, because she says mobile payment is used for almost everything she buys in China, even in remote villages. She also shows a first-aid kit with bandages and wound-cleaning supplies. She and her husband started without one, and she recommends carrying a kit on a long ride after it helped when her cousin fell and lost skin from his thigh. Her passport stays in an accessible pocket of her backpack. She also shows a tablet, skincare and toiletries, contact lenses and sunglasses, and she has both wired and wireless headphones and says not to wear noise-canceling ones while riding, because they make it harder to hear what is around you.

Sun, power and snacks

For sun protection she carries face coverings and sunscreen. She uses sunscreen when only a little sun is out and chooses a face covering on full-sun days; she calls these her personal choices for this trip. Her phone is mounted on the handlebars for navigation and route tracking, with a power bank within easy reach that can charge it four times. The front bike bag holds tissues, gloves, baby wipes, snacks and a raincoat. She says the wipes are useful when there is dirt, mud or dust, and that naan and dried fruit are among the snacks they carry.
