They set out to experience the holiday firsthand, despite widespread warnings about the crowds. They got a taxi quickly, but the traffic near tourist spots was gridlocked, forcing them to walk. The city was packed with soldiers, police, and parade drills, especially near Tiananmen Square. They crossed crowd-controlled streets and spotted a strikingly reflective car that everyone was photographing, though they noted it might be a safety hazard. They stumbled on a robot-run drink store, which was slow and awkward but attracted a crowd. They learned National Day marks the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 and is part of Golden Week, when families travel and gather for big meals. The couple searched for a festive flag and a Misha ice cream, but struggled to find a flag. They did find a popular orange sherbet ice cream for 10 yuan, which they loved. Inside a mall, the crowds were even heavier than on the streets, and they briefly lost each other. They eventually took a taxi to a quieter local area, noting flags flying from every shop and delivery drivers still working. They grabbed coffee using a QR code system, admired a communal table tennis area, and remarked on how Chinese husbands always carry their wives' bags—a custom they've embraced. Back at the hotel, Rian reflected on a fantastic day, surprised it wasn't as insane as expected, and hinted that the week might get busier.
