With no tour guide, clear skies, and golden sunshine, the King family set out to discover the city's staggering scale alongside their toddler. Every turn reveals dramatic skyline views, winding streets, and the raw energy of one of China's most unique destinations. For anyone wondering whether Chongqing is worth visiting, this adventure makes an irresistible case.

Day three in Chongqing begins with no tour guide, no fixed schedule and no shortage of stairs. Shawn and Amanda King are on their own for the first time, and the city greets them with sunshine and clear air. With toddler Keanu in tow, they set out to explore the massive metropolis by foot. What unfolds is a family travel vlog filled with coffee missions, bridge crossings, riverside parks, mall discoveries and enough bao buns to prove that street food is the heart of Chongqing.
The morning chase for coconut coffee becomes a small adventure: the first Luckin Coffee is still closed at 9:34 and the mall next door refuses to open. They finally find another branch, and the drink is so good that Amanda barely shares. Back at the Freya Hotel, they show off a room with a soaking tub, projector screen and mountain views, all for about $70 a night. Then they head toward Hongya Cave, pausing at the Chongqing Art Center, whose giant 'chopsticks' design makes the city feel even more futuristic.
Crossing one of Chongqing's famous dual-layer bridges is a highlight. Trains slide underneath while cars and pedestrians use the top, and the bridge surface gives underfoot, which Amanda is not thrilled about. From the middle, though, the view is stunning: Hongya Cave, the river cruises, and the building designed by the same architect as Singapore's Marina Bay Sands. On the other side, Diamond Park is a green oasis with ramps for strollers and endless space for Keanu to run. They sit in the shade, drink water and enjoy one of the clearest days since arriving.
Later comes a spicy duck rice bowl, a mall play area, a tiny car ride for Keanu and a third visit to a local bao bun spot that has become their favorite. The street is full of dumplings, fried chicken and fruit stalls. After nearly eight miles of walking, tired feet win the argument, so they skip the night lights, buy cheese and diapers, and end the day soaking in the hotel tub. Tomorrow they plan a day trip to Chengdu, but this day already captures why Chongqing is stunning.

What were the pork bao buns like?
We loved them so much that we went back three times. You get about eight to ten buns for 18 yuan, and they were easily one of our favorite cheap snacks in Chongqing.
Is the bridge in Chongqing scary to cross?
It was a little scary for me because the ground gives underfoot and you can feel the train passing underneath. Still, the view from the middle made it worth it.
What surprised you most about Chongqing?
Probably seeing dozens of people doing dressed-up photo shoots with photographers in the central square. It seemed like a huge local thing and the outfits were really cool.
Is Chongqing a good city to visit with a toddler?
Yes. Diamond Park has wide ramps and lots of green space, and the mall had a play area where our toddler rode a little car and burned off energy for cheap.
