From Delingha to Tongren

Little Chinese Everywhere begins in Delingha, a name meaning “Golden World” that describes its dry, golden landscape. The city lies beside the western Qaidam Basin, and Mongolian and Tibetan influences appear in its restaurants, shops and architecture. A large solar farm stands outside the city. The journey then heads east, from arid scenery toward grasslands and on to Tongren.

Tongren is known for Thangka art and has Tibetan and Hui communities. Buddhist and Islamic influences appear in the region’s towns and daily life. The traveler meets artists who create sacred Buddhist paintings with gold, lapis lazuli and turquoise. They explain the stories and symbols in a Thangka and describe the patience, precision and spiritual practice involved in making one. The painting is not treated only as a craft; it carries religious meaning for the artists.

Monasteries, food and local traditions

The visit includes Wutun Monastery, an important site for Tibetan Buddhism and Thangka art, and Long Wu Old Town. A monk gives the traveler a tour and shows her intricate paintings. Prayer flags and stupas appear in the landscape, and the monastery visit provides context for Tongren’s Buddhist traditions. The trip also includes Qinghai milk tea and tuiguzhou, described as return-bone-meat.

The traveler talks with residents and observes local architecture, clothing and cuisine. Those conversations add a personal view of how Tibetan and Hui cultures meet in the region. The journey moves between Delingha’s dry golden surroundings, a large solar farm, grasslands, Tongren’s art studios and monasteries. Rather than reducing the area to one culture, the video follows the differences among the places and communities encountered along the route. The local food and community scenes add more detail to the journey. The traveler samples Qinghai milk tea, which she finds salty, and tuiguzhou, described as return-bone-meat. In Tongren, residents’ clothing, cuisine and architecture reflect the cultural influences she discusses. The solar farm near Delingha appears against the dry landscape, while the change toward grasslands marks the drive east. At Wutun Monastery, the monk-led tour focuses on the paintings and religious practices, connecting the art studios with a living Buddhist tradition. The route includes both Delingha and Tongren, with each stop showing different surroundings and customs.
