Kashgar. One of the oldest, continuously inhabited cities in the world, and a former stop on the Silk Road. The heart of Uyghur culture, and the former capital of several Uyghur empires. And I wish the description could end right there. For nowadays it’s part of Xinjiang, perhaps the most heavily policed region in the world. I wasn’t sure what it would be like to meet the Uyghurs. They’re China’s most distinctive minority, who look very different from Han Chinese, and also have a different religion and culture. I had heard that they had all disappeared into reeducation camps and that their city had been demolished. I’m perhaps the most honest and unbiased vlogger you’ll ever watch. This would be one of my greatest challenges.
