We headed deep into Meizhou to try some of the most authentic Hakka food in China – and wow, it did not disappoint. From traditional noodle soup and fire cakes to black garlic soup and the famous salted chicken, every dish had its own unique taste. We even got hands-on in the kitchen, learning how locals prepare and cook the salted chicken the traditional way.

Along the way, we visited a hidden temple, released a turtle back into the lake, explored one of the most unique restaurants we’ve ever stepped into, and checked into a five-star hotel that only cost $70 a night.

This day was packed with food, culture, and history — and it gave us such a good taste of what makes Hakka cuisine so special.
