YANGSHUO in CHINA is so BEAUTIFUL but THINGS. This was filmed by travelshorts. Watch the full journey and explore the filming details and destinations on this page.

Today we explore the beautiful town of Yangshuo, near Guilin in China, the highlight was the bamboo rafting down the river but then everything changed that would affect our holiday for the next few days. We start our day by having breakfast at our Hotel, the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat overlooking the Yulong River. This is such a fabulous location for a hotel, it is very peaceful and the scenery is amazing. After breakfast we walk up river to the bamboo raft station where we get on a couple of bamboo rafts and sail down the Yulong River for a few KM's. We go over a number of little waterfalls as we head down the river. It is really relaxing and I would recommend it to anyone who is in Yangshuo. After we finished sailing down the river we walked back to our hotel where we relaxed on the balcony of our room watching the bamboo rafts coming down the river before having lunch outside in the hotel gardens. After relaxing for a couple more hours Matthew became really ill with food poisoning, which must have been from the lunch. In the evening we had planned to see Impressions Sanjie Liu, with more than 600 performers, in the worlds biggest natural auditorium that uses the Li River waters as its stage and the karst mountains as its backdrop. Unfortunately we needed to cancel it as the main priority was looking after Matthew. As Matthew was so ill all evening and all night I looked if we could rearrange our train tickets to Kong Kong, but it was impossible as there was not seats available for the next few days.

Travel Guides & Tips in this video

Travelshorts' family's 17th day in China includes breakfast overlooking the Yulong River and Karst Mountains, then a bamboo raft trip down the river. They navigate small weirs and enjoy the scenery, while worrying that Matthew may have to raft alone because each raft carries two people and Holly must travel with an adult. Rafting costs 200 RMB per raft, about £21–£22, and the family uses two rafts. After returning to Yangshuo Mountain Retreat, they eat lunch and discuss the hotel's menu, available through a WeChat code. Matthew later falls ill with food poisoning, so they cancel their planned Impressions Sanjie Liu show. The video also points viewers to the family's free travel PDF guide.

Breakfast and the Yulong River

Travelshorts' family is on its 17th day in China and spends the day in Yangshuo. They start at Yangshuo Mountain Retreat with breakfast overlooking the Yulong River and the Karst Mountains. The meal includes French toast, which one family member finds more like an omelette than typical French toast, banana and chocolate pancakes for Matthew, a fruit plate for Holly, and juices for everyone.

The main activity is bamboo rafting down the Yulong River. The family enjoys gliding along the water, navigating small weirs, and looking at the scenery. Going over the weirs is the most memorable part for them, although they get a little wet. They discuss the rule that two people travel on each raft and worry that Matthew might have to go alone, since Holly has to raft with an adult. The cost is 200 RMB per raft, approximately £21–£22, and they need two rafts. After reaching the station, they walk back toward Yangshuo Mountain Retreat. Travelers who would rather not walk can arrange return transportation in advance.

Lunch and a changed evening plan

Back at the hotel, the family has lunch and enjoys the views. They repeat a meal they liked the previous evening and show the hotel menu, which can be accessed by scanning a WeChat code. The relaxed meal is a chance to rest after the raft trip.

The day changes when Matthew becomes ill with food poisoning. The family cancels their plan to see the Impressions Sanjie Liu show and stays in their room. Travelshorts shares a free downloadable PDF guide with information about their China trip, including accommodation, attractions, and tips. They describe it as a source of up-to-date information in a country where travel details can change. The video includes both the scenic outing and the unexpected illness, then turns to practical notes on rafting, river walking, and the guide for future travelers.
